American football player Colin Kaepernick had it all: a multi-million dollar contract with a top team, passionate fans and a promising sports career. Nevertheless, in his protest of police violence against blacks, Kaepernick chooses to kneel during the playing of the national anthem before the game. The television cameras and the eyes of the entire nation are directed at him, but this time not in a sporting context.

Kaepernick's story interweaves evidence of the tensions and divisions among modern American society. The film follows Kaepernick, who was adopted as a child and raised by white parents, through stations in his career, the social and political explosion he unintentionally ignited, and the dramatic consequences of his protest.
