WHY IS WE AMERICANS? weighs in on Newark’s struggle against oppression through the personal triumphs and tragedies of the Baraka family — from Amiri’s civil rights leadership and ultimate lodestar e artistic marginalization, to the horrific murder of his sister, Kimako, through the homicide of daughter Shani (one of the first openly gay black activists) to the historic election of Ras Baraka as mayor of Newark, NJ…and through it all, it is the matriarch, Amina Baraka, this kaleidoscopic family saga is framed by on-camera interviews with Ms. Lauryn Hill After the Screening there will be a Q&A with the philosopher Slavoj Žižek via Zoom.

Anita's journey from Malawi to California and from there to the White House brings her up close and personal with the gaps and controversies of the United States – from the gap between the big cities and the peripheral towns to the divisions between race, class and gender. They are convinced that in Europe they will be able to train and fulfill their dreams, but even after they arrive on the continent, they face prejudices and deep cultural gaps. Training in Europe disillusions them from their dream, and they even consider illegally escaping to Germany. Their skiing dreams and with them the idealization of the West slowly fade away, leading the three girls to unexpected places. The film brings the story of the struggle of the Afghan women from a unique perspective, and presents a human drama that begins with a simple and innocent dream and ends with an emotional and unpredicted roller coaster.

Now, just before this antiquated law is repealed, a series of characters from all parts of American society, from an academic lecturer to two outlaws, find themselves inside a bar in the Harlem neighborhood of New York, and discover how a single gunshot will forever change their lives. In the film by director Christina Callas, the story of Harlem is sometimes depicted as a surprising and rhythmic jazz song, centered on a musical, human and political drama: a straight line connects the racist law of 1926 and the tensions, violence and racism that exist in New York today.

The members of the band do not go on concert tours in large stadiums, and are forced to perform in front of a limited audience in a small club. A moment before turning forty, after divorces and separations, they decide to set themselves an ultimatum: become stars within a year, or disband the band and retire from the world of music. In the field of pop, ageism towards women is a universal issue. The film follows the attempts of the three members of the failed Icelandic band to fill concert halls, and to find their own formula for combining art, femininity and career.
